Oncology Services and Procedures
The goal of ‘Cycle of Care’ is to give patients the best chances of a positive outcome and enhanced quality and vitality of life through early diagnosis, optimal treatment interventions, and a multidisciplinary team approach, along with immaculate symptom control. This approach is crucial for effective cancer diagnosis and ensures that patients receive the best cancer treatment in Malaysia. Our team of experienced professionals, including a oncologist in Malaysia, is dedicated to providing comprehensive care tailored to each individual's needs.
Clinical Oncologists
After a cancer diagnosis by a primary consultant, the patient is referred to an oncologist who specialises in cancer treatment. Oncologists play a crucial role in guiding patients through their cancer journey, providing expertise in various treatment options and support throughout the process.
Cancer Screening and Diagnosis
The oncologist will conduct thorough investigations to gather more information about the cancer. This may involve procedures such as blood tests, imaging tests, bone marrow biopsies, liver biopsies, and colonoscopies. Early cancer diagnosis is essential for effective treatment, and the oncologist will ensure that patients receive the appropriate assessments to inform their care plan.
Cancer Treatment Options
Following the diagnosis, the oncologist will discuss suitable treatment options tailored to the patient’s condition and address any concerns. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy treatment, and radiotherapy. Patients will also undergo a pre-treatment counselling session with both the oncologist and an oncology nurse to prepare them for what to expect.
Cancer Treatment Procedures
Patients will meet with the oncologist for consultations before each treatment session. Regular blood investigations will be carried out as treatment progresses, and imaging tests will be conducted after two to three cycles. Any clinical issues faced by the patient will be addressed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care.
Multidisciplinary Team
At Sunway Cancer Centre, cancer patients can expect a comprehensive review of their condition through a multi-disciplinary plan created by a team of cancer specialists on-site. This collaborative approach maximises the chances of disease remission and enhances the patient's quality of life. Our multidisciplinary team includes doctors, dietitians, pharmacists, oncology nurses, rehabilitation staff, psychologists, counsellors, home nursing staff, and physiotherapists.
Sunway Cancer Centre also features a tumour board, where meetings are held to review cancer patients from an exclusive multidisciplinary perspective. This meeting brings together consultants from surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology to review each patient’s diagnosis, ensuring the best possible management outcomes. Tumour boards are essential for achieving excellence in cancer care and fostering optimal collaboration among specialists.
Post-treatment & Follow Up
Once treatment is completed, regular follow-ups with the consultant will be scheduled, including blood tests and imaging studies to monitor the patient's progress. Continuous support and care are vital for patients recovering from various cancers, including childhood cancer, skin cancer ovarian cancer, and more. For patients undergoing mammogram screening, timely follow-ups are also crucial for ensuring ongoing health.
